AIR SEALING

AIR SEALING REBATES FOR MAINE HOMEOWNERS

**Air Sealing Is Now An Included Practice In All Rebate Tiers.  Call For Details**

Air sealing is a term for a number of different methods that allow your home to be more efficient. You might think that if you're just sealing up cracks around windows and doors, that's all you need to do. But there are actually several different kinds of air leaks in your home that all need to be sealed up if you want your house to be energy efficient.

The first kind of air leak is the one most people are familiar with: the one caused by cracks around windows and doors. This is called "door/window" air leakage, and it accounts for about 50% of a house's total air leakage. So when Mattra Inc seals those doors and windows, we make a big impact quickly.

But there are other kinds of leaks too—for example, those caused by improper insulation or ventilation systems.

There are also leaks caused by interior areas like walls, floors, ceilings and roof spaces that don't have enough insulation or ventilation. These leaks let warm air escape outside through cracks or gaps in their surfaces as well as through ventilation ducts or vents inside these spaces themselves. In fact, there are 19 trouble spots as identified by Efficiency Maine. Check out graphic below, courtesy of Efficiency Maine.

Air Sealing Trouble Spots

If you're facing a cold winter and wondering why your utility bills are so high, the answer may be right under your nose: your home.

The most common way that homes lose heat is through cracks and gaps that allow air to escape. That's why it's crucial to find these trouble spots and seal them up as soon as possible.

Here are some of the places where air leaks tend to occur:

-Around windows: Windows are prime areas for air leakage because they're often not properly sealed with weather stripping or caulking, which allows cold air in through the cracks around them.

-Between floors: When moisture gets trapped between floors, it can cause mold growth that will increase your heating costs as well as your risk of respiratory problems such as asthma and allergies. You can fix this problem by installing insulation between floors or laying down radiant barrier tape between floors and walls to reflect heat back into the room where it belongs!

-Around doors: Doors are another source of heat loss through gaps between door frames and walls or even just cracked door frames themselves! This can be easily fixed with weather stripping around doors or replacing old doors altogether with newer ones (which usually have better insulation).

Fortunately, you don't have to fix these problems yourself. And in most cases you don't have to pay for air sealing because of Efficiency Maine.
